context
«muslimgauze"—the primary musical project of Brian Jones (1961–1999), a British experimental musician whose work was influenced by the conflicts and history of the Muslim world. Jones released dozens of albums under the name muslimgauze, distinguished by his high productivity, yet he never achieved mass popularity.
concept
The archive of MuslimGauze covers reflects Brian Jones’s uncompromising political stance, which is primarily demonstrated in the album and track titles, as well as in the visual imagery featured on the covers, shaping the perception of the releases.
The titles and images set the interpretive direction for the releases: they help the viewer see the political context behind the music and understand which themes were important to the artist. Without them, his work could be interpreted solely as a musical interest in the region, missing the political dimension.
In this project, I first display cropped sections of the covers, focusing attention on the expressive image, and then the full cover along with the title.
material selection principle
When selecting the material, I looked for provocative release titles that read as direct political statements and are immediately understandable without further explanation. For the framing, I highlighted segments where, in my view, the political and visual expressiveness of the material manifests most vividly.
Structure
The book is organized not chronologically, but through visual connections between the covers. During the process, I discovered recurring images and themes, such as faces turned toward the viewer. I structured the sequence so that certain images gradually transition into others, creating visual echoes between adjacent pages. Furthermore, groups are not explicitly labeled—the reader can establish the connections independently.
