Design of an Apron Based on an Architectural Study of Count M. P. Tolstoy’s Tenement House.
The Tolstovsky House is currently undergoing restoration. The major changes have affected the interior space of the building: familiar hallways and courtyards are now concealed by construction elements, and the house, which is known to the residents, is gradually changing its appearance before their eyes. During the restoration period, the house becomes a starting point for exploring the paradox of Theseus’s ship—the question of what preserves an object’s identity when its material components change. Through architecture imbued with the traces of time and human lives, the project addresses the problem of self-identity: what allows us to remain ourselves when our experiences, beliefs, and inner worlds are constantly evolving.
